Thornbury Parish

David Moyse

I am married to Diane with a daughter Victoria who is a Qualified Teacher, living in Norfolk, and a son Paul, also a Teacher who, lives with his family in Maputo, Mozambique, but now teaches in Qatar.

We moved here to Thornbury from Gorleston on Sea, near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, and I worked in the Agricultural Industry for 50 years with same Company, until my retirement in 2009.

I began training as a Lay Reader in 1988 and was licenced in Norwich Cathedral in 1991 to the Parish of St Andrew, Gorleston on Sea.

In Great Yarmouth, I was involved with The Seafarer’s Centre (Seaman’ Mission) as the Chairman of the Trustees, and at times was also involved with the “hands on” work of the Mission. I was also a committee member for the Merchant Navy Welfare Board in the Eastern Section.

Work brought me over to the West Country in July 2000 where we moved into Thornbury.

I was re-licenced to the Gloucester Diocese in Tewkesbury Abbey, and attached to the Thornbury Group of Parishes, initially under Rev David Primrose.

I am also a Chaplain for the Sea Cadets, a position I have held for many years.  In Norfolk I was attached to Great Yarmouth Sea Cadets (TS NORFOLK) for a number of years, and again here in Gloucestershire, I have been with Gloucester Sea Cadets (TS GLOUCESTER) since 2001, for which I have been awarded a long service medal by the MSSCC.  (Marine Society and Sea Cadet Corps).

In the Parish, as well as helping out with services at Thornbury, Oldbury and Shepperdine, I was sometimes involved with school assemblies, ably assisted at times by my side-kick “Charlie”, (a multi-coloured parrot puppet), a favourite of the youngsters.

I have now taken a step back from full time Readership and will now have the title of “Reader with PTO” – that is the Bishop’s “Permission To Officiate”, allowing me to continue to minister, albeit at a much reduced amount, in the future after retirement.
