The Choir

St. Mary’s is proud of its dedicated and experienced church choir of adult voices, joined by children on occasions. While there isn’t an established junior choir at the moment, the church choir cherishes its collaboration with The Octaves and encourages any interested children and teenagers to try the choral experience.

The choir’s extensive repertoire can be heard during the sung 10.30am Eucharist on Sunday morning, as well as at Choral Evensong on the first Sunday of each month. Performances outside its home church have included Choir Pilgrimages to various Cathedrals and concerts with ensembles such as the Flowers Brass Band from Gloucester and the Fitzhardinge Consort.

The choir rehearses on Friday evenings from 7.30 – 8.45pm. We do not require availability to commit to all the rehearsals and services (joining the occasional Choral Evensong is absolutely fine) but would expect new singers to keep up with the performed repertoire. Basic music reading skills (or willingness to be trained in them) are therefore essential.

The Octaves!

OCTAVES stands for Our Children in Thornbury Are Very Enthusiastic Singers.

The choir is not attached to any school or church and is open to any primary school child in and around Thornbury. They rehearse at 6.30 at St Mary’s Church on Friday evenings.

The choir has 20 members and there is plenty of room for more!  It is run by Kate Phillipson-Masters and you can contact her for more information by phone on 411253 or by email kate.pm@hotmail.co.uk.

OCTAVES have sung at Thornbury Carnival, Christingle services, a garden party and a Songs of Praise with Thornbury Band. They have also featured in concerts by Thornbury Choral Society and The Flowers Brass Band.

The Bells

St Mary's bells are regularly rung for Sunday Evensong from 5:15pm to 6:00pm each week, but please check with the Tower Captain.  We also often ring for the 10:30 service on Sunday, and the bells are also rung when required for weddings, some other services and special events.

We practice on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings of the each month from 7:30pm to 9.00pm (but again, please check with the Tower Captain).

New ringers and ringers from other towers are always welcome to join us.
